Heritage Open Days 2020

Hidden Histories of Wakefield Museums & Castles

For 2020, we've brought the festival online with a peek into our ancient castles and weird and wonderful collections...

Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at our museum store? Here's a peek into our collections and how we look after them.

Does Pontefract really have its own saint? And what is the connection to the castle? Discover the fortunes of Thomas of Lancaster.

From to wine to liquorice, and even Civil Wars prisoners - lots of things were kept in the Pontefract Castle cellar. Follow us down into the dungeon for a tour and potted history.

And did you know there is a second underground space at Pontefract Castle? Let us show you the original stairway and abandoned passages leading to the Keep's well chamber.

Finally, enjoy an introduction to the Roman displays at Castleford Museum and find out about Castleford's origins as Lagentium, an important fort and town for the Roman Empire.

If you've enjoyed this taster of the Wakefield Museums & Castles sites and collections, make sure you check out more of our Stories and Activities and follow us on social media.
