The Wakefield Curriculum

Wakefield Museums and Castles are one of many cultural organisations who are part of SPARK, Wakefield’s Local Cultural Education Partnership.

In 2024 SPARK worked with local schools to develop a place-based creative curriculum resource for Early Years and Primary teachers.

The result was the Wakefield Curriculum, a set of resources created using the collections and expertise of our district’s cultural organisations, and include stories of local events, people and places.

Resources were developed in consultation with teachers and cover three themes:
  • Coal mining
  • The local environment
  • Sculpture
The place-based creative curriculum was created during Our Year. Our Year was a celebration of creativity, culture, heritage, movement and community that took place across Wakefield district in 2024. Our Year was funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Arts Council England and led by Wakefield Council and partners.

Get Creative

During Our Year an activity booklet, Get Creative, was created with a range of tasks, prompts and challenges for you, your students, staff and perhaps parents and carers to explore creative routes to make positive change.

With an A-Z of activities from contributors across Wakefield district and further afield this booklet provides fresh ideas for you to dip into and try with your children and young people.
