Shakespeare's Richard II: Fact or Fiction? KS3/KS4 Workshop

Links to history, literacy and drama are developed throughout this workshop.

What links Pontefract Castle, King Richard II and William Shakespeare together?
Why might Shakespeare have strayed from the truth when writing his play about Richard II?

A performance of Richard II at Pontefract Castle (Wakefield Express)

Pontefract Castle was the setting for both the factual and fictional demise of King Richard II. In his play Richard II, William Shakespeare writes a dramatic account of the deposed king’s miserable imprisonment and murderous death at the castle.

But how much of what Shakespeare wrote is true?

In this workshop pupils will bring key excerpts from Shakespeare’s play to life through dramatic performance, discover that Shakespeare’s version of events was not entirely accurate and formulate opinions about why the world famous playwright did not stick to the facts. A walk around the castle site is also included in the session.

This workshop will provide a starting point for the pupils' exploration of the Richard II which can then be further developed back at school.

Workshop Includes:

• Learning about history where it happened

• An introduction to a Shakespearean play

• Developing drama and discussion skills

Price: £64 for standard workshops delivered on-site

Venue: Pontefract Castle

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes or 2 hours depending on what best fits your timetable

You can extend your visit to the castle by taking a self-led look around or booking a guided dungeon tour after your workshop – please ask at the time of booking for more information.
