The Romans in Castleford KS3 Workshop

Links to local history, international history and geography are developed throughout this workshop.

How do we know that the Ancient Romans lived in Castleford?
What was life like for the people who lived, worked and visited there in Roman times?
How can objects help us to understand the past?

This multi-sensory session will begin with pupils engaging in a set of activities to bring some of the sights, sounds and smells of Roman Castleford to life. They will then have the exciting opportunity to handle and examine real Roman artefacts.

Working in small groups, the pupils will be challenged to identify what the objects are and what information they reveal about the Roman settlement and the lives of the people who lived, worked and visited there. Pupils will then complete artefact recording sheets for their favourite objects, using words and drawings to record their observations and conclusions.

Workshop Includes:

• Handling real Roman artefacts

• Learning facts about how and why the Romans settled in Castleford

• Making observations and drawing conclusions
